What is a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in your mouth.
Why would I need a Tooth Extraction?
There are multiple reasons why your dentist may perform a tooth extraction. Here are a few reasons why:
Your wisdom teeth may be impacted and causing you discomfort and pain
Baby teeth sometimes don’t fall out in time to allow the permanent teeth to come in causing your teeth to shift
Teeth may be extracted from someone getting braces to create room for the teeth to shift in the correct position
Infected teeth due to tooth decay may be causing other health issues
Damaged or broken teeth may have too much damage to be repaired
A very loose tooth may also require extraction if it can’t be saved
Who can perform a Tooth Extraction?
You can feel reassured with Dr. Raquel who can perform tooth extractions.
For a simple tooth extraction of a tooth that can be seen, general dentists usually perform these procedures. They use a dental instrument known as an elevator to loosen the tooth and forceps to extract the tooth.
For a surgical tooth extraction, like a wisdom tooth extraction, an oral surgeon or general dentist performs these highly specialized procedures. When a tooth has broken off at the gum or hidden in the gum, the oral surgeon would make an incision in your gum to expose the tooth and extract it.
